On 3rd June 2018, I got a call from Sharminub Institute for the medical assistant. As I visited with my team from Dhulikhel Hospital and we quickly assessed them all and came to conclusion a diagnosis of scabies and outbreak in the monastery.
32% of monks are infected with scabies. We treated all the infected monks with oral and/or topical medicines as per the severity of the rashes and entire teams are also treated as it is necessary.
We conducted education program to the monks how to maintain the personal hygiene and the surrounding especially during these particular situation.
We follow up after one week and after one month to make sure that scabies is fully cured.

Oral diseases have significant impact on the health and well-being of the Karma Kagyu Monks and Nuns. As the goal of KHCP regarding the oral health policy is to prevent and control of the determinants of oral disease and promote oral health amongst the monks and nuns of the Karma Kagyu Monasteries. Most of the oral diseases are preventable and better oral health can be facilitated through several of health promotion and intervention using appropriate technology and manpower.

We did regular oral health screening and this time we also include questionnaire survey regarding Oral health Knowledge, attitude, behavior and practice with clinical intraoral examination. Dental caries status, gingival index, calculus status and Dental Aesthetic index were also recorded.

The entire clinical programs were continued with Oral health education and prevention of oral disease.

Note: Among all the oral disease, Gingivitis seems very common among the students. (Many of them don’t have toothbrush to brush their teeth daily). Almost all the students need Oral prophylaxis, so Scaling were done to almost all of them.
