Flood catastrophy in Leh/Ladakh
NOTE FROM 17th AUGUST 2010:The Indian area of the Himalayas, Ladakh (altitude 3500m) and its direct surroundings have been badly affected by devastating landslides and floods since last Thursday. According to official figures, approximately 16 lives were lost; around 500 people are still missing. In the principal town of Leh, eye witnesses reported that in some places the mud had piled up to a height of three metres. Buses were swept along as far as two kilometres and even houses and cars sank in the floods. Roads and bridges have been destroyed and buried, telephone connections still remain unstable. During the night from Friday to Saturday the inhabitants have escaped to monasteries on higher ground. The abbot of the Kagyü monastery Karma Dupgyud Choeling (which supported by the KHCP) contacted us immediately after the catastrophe and informed us that they were safe, and now supporting people of the surrounding areas. Already in spring the Karmapa Healthcare Project (KHCP) has scheduled a visit to the monastery for March 2011 in order for our doctors and nurses to set up a medical camp. We will now seek to offer medical care to the inhabitants according to our resources. We would greatly appreciate donations for this medical camp. Many thanks for your support, Your KHCP team.
